So Near Yet So Far For Chong Wei

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- National shuttler Datuk Lee Chong Wei came within a whisker of lifting the world title for the first time but his arch nemesis Lin Dan stood in the way.

Chong Wei, the world number one men's singles player and the top seed, lost to Super Dan in 22-20, 14-21 and 21-23 in an epic final that lasted an hour and 22 minutes at the Wembley Indoor Arena in London Sunday night.

The match was beamed 'live" by Radio Television Malaysia (RTM).

Chong Wei got off to a fine start in the first set and though Lin Dan gave a stiff fight and forced a deuce after clawing up from 16 points despite Chong Wei being at game point, the Penangite prevailed.

However, Lin Dan took the upperhand in the second set and finished off Chong Wei in 21-14.

The rubber set was a thriller all the way with both players fighting neck-to-neck, toe-to-toe.

But it was Chong Wei who reached match point first but the wily Chinese again clawed his way from a point adrift to force deuce.

Chong Wei then secured the advantage and could have landed his first world title but things became awry for him after that and it was Lin Dan who ended up the winner wrapping up the set in 23-21 for his fourth world title.

The title meant a lot to Chong Wei as the World Championship trophy and the Olympics gold medal are the only silverware he has yet to win on the world stage.

He will be ruing the defeat for sometime as it was a case of "so near yet so far" and more so with the prime minister himself and millions of Malaysians counting on him to do Malaysia proud.

Seen among the hundreds of Malaysian fans cheering Chong Wei on at the stadium was Muhammad Ashraf Haziq Rossli, the Malaysian student in England who made the headlines after he was assaulted and robbed by thugs in the riots that broke out in the country the past week.

23^rd OCM Executive Board Meeting –

The 23^rd OCM Executive Board meeting was held on 14^th June 2011 at OCM Boardroom, Mezzanine Floor, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur. The following matters were noted or decided:-

The OCM Selection Committee will hold its meetings on 26^th and 27^th July 2011, to select the athletes and officials of the Glasgow 4^th Commonwealth Youth Games and the Indonesia 26^th SEA Games 2011.
The 6^th OCM-Pharmaton Ex-International Golf Challenge 2011would be held at the Kelab Golf Seri Selangor on 27^th July 2011 from 6.45 am. The entry fee is RM100/= and the closing date was 20^th July 2011.
Mr. Brian Minikin has completed the first phase of the evaluation of the capacity and functioning of NSAs and left Malaysia on 13^th June 2011.
Prof. Leigh Robinson, the lead researcher of the team, would be in Kuala Lumpur from 18^th to 22^nd July for meetings and discussions with OCM, NSAs and other organizations involved in sports development in Malaysia.

1^st Annual General Meeting of the OCM Trust Management Committee

The 1^st Annual General Meeting of the OCM Trust Management Committee Meeting was held at on 14^th June 2011 at OCM Boardroom. The Trust Management Committee agreed in principle to disburse a maximum of RM50,000/= for the first half of 2011 and a maximum of RM200,000/= for the second half of 2011. As only 5 NSAs had applied for grants from the OCM Trust Fund for the first half of 2011, each NSA would be granted a maximum of RM10,000/=. The final grant to be approved would be based on the details provided by each of the 5 NSAs.

On the investments of the Trust Fund, the current value of the Trust Fund as at 10^th June 2011 was RM13,641,432.99, which was an increase of RM529,548.36 or 4.07% from the last date of valuation, which was end of 2010. The Committee decided that the current asset allocation of the fund was a little risky as around 54% of the fund was on equity. The target was to reduce the equity portion to around 20%.

30th OCM Annual General Assembly 2011

The 30th OCM Annual General Assembly was successfully concluded on 18^th June 2011. 80 delegates from 32 out of 35 Ordinary Members and 8 delegates from 8 out of 20 Associate Members of OCM attended the above AGA. He stated that with the three newly elected Office Bearers, OCM will continue to support and assist its members to improve themselves, especially in the area of governance. OCM will also emphasize on its main role of selection, preparation and management of teams and athletes participating in multi-sports Games.

4th Advanced Sport Management Course 2011 in progress

The second session of the above course held from the 19^th to the 22^nd May 2011, had ended. The remaining eleven (11) participants are looking forward to the third session which would be from 4^th to 7^th August 2011, with the final session, from 6^th to 9^th October 2011.

Come October 2011, only the resilient and persevering participants who remain, will qualify and receive the International Olympic Committee certificate for the Diploma in Management of Olympic Sport Organisations. There will be a combined graduation ceremony of the 2010 batch of eleven successful participants with the present eleven-participant batch of 2011 if they are successful. Let’s hope all these present eleven sports officials will be able to make it till October 2011.

Announcing the results of the 3^rd Advanced Sport Management Course 2010

Out of the thirteen final participants who did well, two of them have not submitted their assignments on time. As a result, only eleven (11) would be issued the Diploma in Management of Olympic Sport Organisations certificate.

The eleven (11) successful all male participants of the 3^rd Advanced Sport Management Course 2010 are as follows: Alfred Ong Soon Chuan, Franco Liu Foo Yeon, Moey Wooi San, Liew Kok Wah,

Edwin Dutton, Hardeep Singh, Md. Saadon bin A. Shukor, Mohd Zarrawi Ravi Abdullah, Vincent Ho Swee Peng, Peter Chee Nyuk Min, and Raymond Tan @ Arman Annuar Tan.

2011 IOC Trophy: “Sport and Social Responsibility”

Since 1985, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has made available to all NOCs an annual IOC Trophy, each year with a different theme. The NOCs are responsible for identifying and selecting a recipient of the Trophy in their countries.

For the year 2011, the title of the IOC Trophy is “Sport and Social Responsibility”. The Trophy will be presented to any athlete, official, organisation and other people, who are involved in sport, who are role models and an inspiration to young people.

OCM has the pleasure to invite NSAs, Media and the public to nominate candidates for consideration to be the recipient of the 2011 Trophy, which will be presented at the XIX OCM Annual Dinner in December 2011. The closing date for nomination is 31^st July 2011.

30^th OCM Annual General Assembly 2011

The members of the Independent Panel, appointed by OCM to conduct the biennial elections of Office Bearers of OCM are Hajah Norminshah Sabirin (Returning Officer), Encik C. Sivanandan and Encik Ong Leng Kok.

Ordinary members of OCM were invited by the Returning Officer on 26^th May 2011 to submit their nomination forms to elect Office Bearers of OCM for the session 2011/2013. Their nomination forms were opened by the Independent Panel at 5.00 p.m. on 7^th June 2011. The nominations received were checked and confirmed by the Independent Panel, after which a media release were sent to the media as well as to the affiliates of OCM and the nominated candidates.

All affiliates of OCM are reminded of the 30^th OCM Annual General Assembly which will be held on Saturday, 18^th June 2011 at 9.30 a.m. at OCM Indoor Sports Arena, Level 3, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur. In accordance with the Articles and Bylaws of the Constitution of OCM, Notice, Agenda, the Financial Report for Year ending 31^st December 2010 and the 29^th Annual Report, have been sent to the affiliates of OCM on 25^th May 2011 and are also available in OCM Website, www.olympic.org.my.

The Returning Office, Hajah Norminshah Sabirin has requested the Registration of Delegates forms, duly filled and signed by either the President or the Honorary Secretary (Secretary General) of the Ordinary Member of OCM to be returned to OCM on or before 10.00 am on Monday, 13^th May 2011.

In accordance with the Articles and By-Laws of the Constitution of OCM, Ordinary Members of OCM must submit their Registration of Delegates forms, duly filled up with the names of 3 delegates and 2 alternates, to OCM by 10.00 a.m. on 13^th June 2011. Non-registered delegates would not be permitted to attend and vote at the 30^th OCM Annual General Assembly on 18^th June 2011. Associate Members of OCM must also submit their Registration forms with the name of one observer, who can attend the 30^th OCM Annual General Assembly but has no voting rights.

Survey of National Sports Associations (NSAs) in Malaysia

Mr. Brian Minikin has completed the first phase of the evaluation of the capacity and functioning of NSAs and will be leaving Malaysia in the morning of 13^th June 2011. Due to SUKMA, except for about a dozen NSAs, the remaining NSAs are still filing up the Survey forms distributed by Mr. Brian Minikin. In any case, while waiting for more information from the survey forms submitted by the NSAs, Mr. Brian Minikin has managed to analyse the returns from the Rating Exercise on NSAs carried out by OCM in 2007 and 2009.

NSAs that have not filled up and return their Survey forms to OCM are requested to do so as soon as possible. The completed Survey forms submitted after Mr. Brian Minikin has left Malaysia will be emailed to him to analyse. Mr. Brian Minikin will return to Malaysia during the first week of July 2011, when he will meet representatives of NSAs to discuss in depth the capacity and functioning of NSAs.

Prof. Leigh Robinson, the lead researcher of the team, will be in Kuala Lumpur from 18^th to 22^nd July for meetings and discussions with OCM, NSAs and other organizations involved in sports development in Malaysia.

OCM’s Relationship with BFM 89.9FM

BFM 89.9FM, has been broadcasting news from OCM/NSAs in their weekly programme –

"Sports Un-illustrated" - hosted by Ross Yusoff on Sundays from 10.00am to 12 Noon. The

National Associations of Ice Skating, Water Skiing, Hockey and Lawn Bowls and have been

providing news and information to Encik Chris Syer, a member of the OCM Media Committee and

in turn BFM 89.9FM has provided the above sports some coverage.

NSAs, that wish to have their up-coming events and personalities featured on the BFM 89.9FM

“Sports Un-illustrated” programme, are requested to make contact with Encik Chris Syer, a member

of the OCM Media Committee by e-mail < scianda@yahoo.com > or mobile 012 3895950. The

publicity from having their news aired on BFM89.9FM would certainly benefit NSAs concerned,

their sports and their athletes.

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 April (Bernama) -- Ketua Pengarah Institut Sukan Negara (ISN) Datuk Dr Ramlan Abd Aziz yang dirawat di Hospital Serdang sejak Jumaat lepas, dibenarkan pulang tengah hari Isnin.

Jumaat lepas beliau dibawa ke hospital itu selepas mengadu sakit dada ketika berada di pejabatnya di ISN Bukit Jalil, dan selepas diperiksa, dia disahkan mengalami ulser di perut.

"Saya sudah dibenarkan keluar tengah hari tadi dan diberikan rehat selama seminggu," katanya kepada Bernama menerusi khidmat sistem pesanan ringkas (SMS).

Dr Ramlan dikejarkan ke hospital pada pagi Jumaat lepas, sebelum majlis perasmian sambutan 15 tahun ISN berlangsung di Bukit Jalil pada sebelah petangnya.

Pengenalan

Sambutan yang akan dibuat pada 1 April 2011 ini adalah bertujuan merapatkan hubungan di antara warga sukan secara keseluruhannya yang mana jalinan kerjasama dengan pihak-pihak yang terbabit secara langsung dengan pembangunan sukan adalah amat penting di dalam membentuk kesepakatan yang membawa kepada perkembangan positif bagi kecemerlangan sukan negara. Dengan penganjuran majlis sambutan ini, ISN diharap akan terus melangkah setapak kehadapan demi pembangunan sukan negara.

Objektif

Objektif penganjuran majlis sambutan ini adalah:-

Mengeratkan perhubungan Institut Sukan Negara dengan jabatan kerajaan/ agensi-agensi sukan/ badan-badan NGO’s/ badan-badan korporat / Institusi pengajian tinggi awam dan swasta / persatuan sukan / Media cetak dan elektronik / Jurulatih/ Atlet yang telah terlibat secara langsung mahupun tidak langsung di dalam perkembangan dan kemajuan sukan negara.
Menjadikan forum dua hala dan penganjuran sukan sebagai medium perantara bagi menjalinkan persefahaman di dalam membentuk kerjasama bagi pembangunan sukan Negara.
Memperkembangkan maklumat sains sukan khasnya kepada pengiat sukan yang terlibat secara langsung mahupun tidak langsung menerusi program pameran Sains, Perubatan dan Teknologi Sukan

Inter City Gymnastics Championship 2011

The Federal Territory Gymnastics Association will be hosting the Inter City Gymnastics Championship as follows:-

Date : 2-3 April 2011
Place : Gimnasium 1, Majlis Sukan Negara, Kuala Lumpur
Events : Rhythmic Gymnatics Individual Event
Rhythmic Gymnastics Group Exercise

About 200 participants from 7 foreign cities such as Moscow, Magadan (Russia), St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Melbourne, Christchurch and Taskent including state and national gymnasts from Kuala Lumpur will be taking part in this event. Local gymnasts from Melaka, Perak and Selangor will also be participating.

This competition also serves as one of the trial selection of rhythmic gymnasts who will be representing FT Kuala Lumpur in SUKMA 2012.

Teachers introduced to Olympism

GAMBANG: A total of 137 teachers from six Wesley Methodist Schools (Five secondary and one
primary school) were introduced to Olympism and Olympic Education.

The teachers, who gathered in Bukit Gambang Resort City for the annual Wesley Methodist School
Teachers’ Conference organized by the Methodist Education Council, were receptive to the
information presented to them by the Pierre de Coubertin Society of Malaysia (PCSM) entitled
“Olympism and Character Building”.

The three hour session on March 12th was divided into two parts; the first part was the introduction
to Olympism and the second part, a group discussion using the Open Space Technology on how to
implement Olympic Education in their schools.

For the first part, the teachers watched videos and were informed about the founder, principles and
values of Olympism by speaker, Nicholas Chan who is also the Vice-President of PCSM.

After imparting them with the basic grounds of Olympism, the teachers were then triggered to initiate a
group discussion using the Open Space Technology method. Topics like “Religion and Olympism”,
“Physical Education and Olympism” and “ICT and Olympism” were sparked and the teachers
brainstormed on how to get the message of Olympism through to their students. Each group
subsequently presented the outcome of their discussion.

At the end of the session, a survey was distributed and one of the questions asked was “Do you think
that Olympism can be integrated into the school syllabus?”. 97% of the teachers answered “Yes”.

When asked how would they describe the relevance of Olympism in a child’s upbringing, Cik Nur
Natasha Bt Muhamad Rani, a Mathematics teacher from the Wesley Methodist School in Seremban
wrote “It teaches the child to recognize the values of life through sports.” while Mr. Au Yong San
from the Wesley Methodist School in Melaka who teaches Geography and Art commented, “It would
inculcate the spirit of perseverance, tolerance, patience, competitiveness, cooperation and
comradeship.”.

This was the first time that PCSM was approaching teachers about Olympism and it proved to be a success as the teachers found Olympic Education to be relevant in the promotion of a balanced and holistic development of a child.

Out of the six schools that participated, two principals have already expressed their interest to organize an Olympism Outreach Program in their schools.- FAIR PLAY

Hadiah kahwin Azizulhasni

Puas hati raih emas Beijing

KEJAYAAN jaguh berbasikal trek negara, Mohd Azizulhasni Awang meraih pingat emas dalam acara keirin di Piala Dunia Klasik di Beijing, China, adalah hadiah perkahwinan untuk bakal isterinya, Athiah Ilyana Abdul Samat yang akan dinikahinya, Sabtu ini.

Azizulhasni berkata sebelum ini Athiah Ilyana ada memintanya untuk memenangi emas sebagai hadiah perkahwinan.

"Saya cuma berjanji akan cuba sedaya upaya dan syukur akhirnya berjaya memenangi emas acara keirin selain meraih jersi putih," katanya sebaik tiba di Lapangan Terbang Antarabangsa Kuala Lumpur (KLIA), semalam.

Namun Azizulhasni berkata, kejayaan itu tidak akan melekakannya, sebaliknya kini memasang impian untuk memenangi Jersi Pelangi, sekali gus sebagai juara keirin di Kejohanan Trek Dunia di Denmark, Mac ini.

"Itu impian saya selepas terlepas tahun lalu. Sebagai pemenang jersi putih yang memungut mata terbanyak daripada empat siri Piala Dunia Klasik, saya harus berhati-hati kerana tumpuan pelumba lain akan terarah kepada saya nanti.

Saya akan cuba memberikan yang terbaik kerana setiap kali turun berlumba, saya tidak mahu menghampakan rakyat Malaysia yang mengharapkan kejayaan saya," katanya.

Mengenai kejayaannya memenangi emas keirin di Beijing, Sabtu lalu, Azizulhasni berkata ia adalah kemenangan terbesarnya selepas kecewa dalam dua siri Piala Dunia Klasik yang disertainya di Manchester dan Melbourne.

Saya tidak suka kalah jadi di Beijing saya bertekad untuk menang walaupun terdapat beberapa halangan yang memang menguji kesabaran saya.

"Sebelum perlumbaan lagi berlaku kerosakan pada pedal basikal selain dihimpit oleh seorang pelumba Jepun semasa perlumbaan dan agak keletihan apabila memasuki peringkat akhir," katanya.

Cabaran skuad B-21 negara bermula

MISI skuad bawah 21 tahun (B-21) negara bermula apabila mereka dijadual berlepas ke Slovakia awal pagi esok bagi memulakan saingan Liga Divisyen Dua Slovakia, Liga 1.
Jika sebelum ini timbul pelbagai spekulasi mengenai pemergian skuad tersebut ke Slovakia, kini segala-galanya telah terjawab.

Sepanjang tiga bulan berada di Slova- kia, skuad kendalian Mohd. Azraai Khor Abdullah itu dijadual mengharungi 14 perlawanan iaitu tujuh perlawanan di tempat lawan manakala baki tujuh lagi di gelanggang sendiri.

Skuad negara akan menjadikan Stadium Vion sebagai gelanggang rasmi mereka sepanjang kempen liga tersebut berlangsung yang dijangka tamat pada penghujung Mei depan.

Bagaimanapun, Setiausaha Agung Persatuan Bola Sepak Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad berkata, kese- mua perlawanan yang dihadapi skuad muda negara itu tidak akan dikira mata.

"Adalah sukar bagi pihak Persatuan Bola Sepak (FA) Slovakia untuk mengira mata skuad negara memandangkan saingan liga Slovakia telah pun bermula dan ia sudah pun memasuki pusingan kedua.
"Namun, lawan mereka nanti tetap dikira mata sekiranya mereka berjaya menewaskan skuad negara.
"Jadi tidak timbul sebarang isu mengenai pemergian skuad negara ke Slovakia.

"Lawan mereka nanti pastinya mempamerkan aksi sebenar bagi mengutip mata dan ini merupakan satu pendeda- han yang cukup baik bagi skuad muda negara," jelas Azzuddin.

Walaupun aksi skuad negara nanti tidak akan dikira mata, ganjaran tetap menanti pemain-pemain muda tersebut sekiranya mereka mencatatkan keputu- san membanggakan sehingga tamat saingan liga tersebut.
"Tidak cukup dengan itu, FAM sendiri turut menyediakan habuan buat skuad Harimau Muda A ini nanti tetapi semua itu masih dalam perbincangan," kata Az- zuddin.

Cash and award await silver medallist Azizul

PETALING JAYA: Cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang is in line to receive RM10,000 under the national sports reward scheme for his silver medal effort in the just concluded World Championships in Copenhagen.
Azizul took silver in the keirin and it was his second in the world championship series after a silver in the 200m sprint in Poland last year.

For a world championship held annually, the incentive scheme provided for RM20,000 for a gold, RM10,000 for a silver and RM5,000 for a bronze.

The Terengganu government are expected to hand out the same amount of reward for Azizul but a bigger recognition awaits him at the end of next month.

The 22-year-old is the firm favourite to clinch the 2009 National Sportsman of the Year award based on his achievement as the first Malaysian to claim the World Cup overall title, including winning the legs in Melbourne and Beijing.

In the Asian Championships in Indonesia, Azizul defended his 200m sprint title and played a pivotal role in helping Malaysia bag the team sprint gold for the first time. - Star

Kejayaan Nur Suryani bakar semangat rakan-rakan

NUR SURYANI (tengah) berjaya meraih pingat perak pada Kejohanan Piala Dunia di Australia, Selasa lalu.

KEJAYAAN penembak wanita negara, Nur Suryani Mohd. Taibi meraih pingat perak pada Kejohanan Piala Dunia di Sydney, Australia Selasa lepas sudah pasti akan membakar semangat penembak lain untuk turut mencipta kejayaan pada temasya Sukan Komanwel 2010 di New Delhi, Oktober depan.

Setiausaha Eksekutif Persatuan Menembak Kebangsaan Malaysia, Mejar Jasni Shaari berkata, berdasarkan prestasi semasa, penembak negara seperti Hasli Izwan Amir Hassan dan Nur Suryani, ia memberi petunjuk bahawa skuad negara berkemampuan untuk memperoleh pingat sekurang-kurangnya satu emas di New Delhi nanti.

Astro Arena to meet local demand

MALAYSIANS will get to enjoy more local sports content on television as Astro Arena (Channel 801), the country's first 24-hour local sports channel, goes on air from today at noon.

Nicol raih gelaran keenam

DATUK Nicol David berjaya merangkul kejuaraan keenam Kejohanan Skuasy Terbuka Kuala Lumpur CIMB 2010.

Selepas kempunan muncul juara pada edisi 2009, ratu skuasy negara ini kembali merampas mahkota kejuaraan selepas membenam pemain Mesir, Omneya Abdel Kawy pada aksi final di Berjaya Times Square, Kuala Lumpur semalam.

Nicol hanya memerlukan masa selama 31 minit untuk menumbangkan pemain pilihan keempat itu dengan kemenangan straight set 11-4, 11-2, 13-11.

“Saya sudah menjangkakan perlawanan ini memang sukar. Omneya bermain dengan cukup tenang kerana dia tidak kisah sama ada menang atau kalah.

“Sebaliknya, saya perlu menang kerana saya bermain di tempat sendiri selain untuk menebus kegagalan tahun lalu.

“Pada suatu ketika, Omneya memberi sedikit tekanan kepada saya tetapi mujur, saya dapat mengekalkan rentak permainan untuk meraih kemenangan straight set,” kata Nicol yang juga pemain No. 1 dunia.
Selaku juara, Nicol membawa pulang trofi dan wang tunai US$8,550 manakala Omneya membawa pulang wang tunai US$6,075.

Shabery Cheek cipta sejarah

GELANGGANG di Kompleks Futsal Putrajaya hampir siap sepenuhnya menjelang Rentap Futsal Putrajaya Kosmo!. pada 14 hingga 16 Mei depan.

MENTERI Belia dan Sukan, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek mencipta sejarah tersendiri apabila menjadi pemain pertama yang berjaya menjaringkan gol di gelanggang Kompleks Futsal Presint 18, Putrajaya.
Semalam, Shabery bersama timbalannya, Datuk Razali Ibrahim serta para pegawai kanan Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) mempamerkan kehebatan masing-masing dalam satu perlawanan persahabatan futsal bagi menguji gelanggang futsal yang baru siap dibina itu.

Biarpun sibuk dengan tugasnya selaku menteri kabinet, Shabery turun meluangkan masa untuk mempamerkan bakatnya dalam permainan futsal.

Beliau memiliki kehebatan tersendiri apabila berjaya membuka tirai jaringan pada perlawanan tersebut sekali gus muncul individu pertama mencipta nama sebagai penjaring di Kompleks Futsal Putrajaya yang serba canggih itu.

Selepas hampir dua jam beraksi, Shabery ternyata berpuas hati dengan pembinaan 11 gelanggang futsal bernilai RM3.45 juta itu dan menganggap ia merupakan yang terbaik pernah dibina oleh KBS berbanding gelanggang futsal lain di seluruh negara. Pembinaannya diselia oleh Perbadanan Putrajaya.

"Setelah saya sendiri bermain di gelanggang ini (Kompleks Futsal Putrajaya), saya sememangnya berpuas hati terutama dengan kerja-kerja pembinaan yang saya anggap sangat teliti.

"Bagi saya, gelanggang ini memenuhi segala piawaian yang telah ditetapkan dan ia selamat digunakan untuk Rentap Futsal Putrajaya sempena sambutan Hari Belia pada 14 hingga 16 Mei ini.

Azizulhasni, Nicol Named 2009 National Sportsman, Sportswoman

KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) -- Cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang and squash queen Datuk Nicol Ann David were named the 2009 National Sportsman and Sportswoman respectively.

Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin presented the main awards and a RM10,000 incentive each to the two winners at the 2009 National Sports Awards here Tuesday night.

Nicol, who won the award for the seventh time, was not present as she is still training in Amsterdam.

The award is the first for Azizulhasni, 22, the track cyclist based in Melbourne, Australia, who ranked first in last season's World Cup Series and also ranked first in the Keirin until March last year.

The Terengganu-born cyclist, who is coached by John Beasley of Australia, showed consistent performance last year by winning the silver in the Keirin event at the World Championship in Poland in March before winning the gold in the same event at the World Championship in Beijing in April.

In November, he won the silver in the Keirin at the World Championship in Melbourne.

His string of successes enabled him to triumph over other candidates for the award namely the incumbent Datuk Lee Chong Wei from badminton, Sazali Abdul Samad (body building), Loh Jack Chang (wushu) and Zulmazran Zulkifli (tenpin bowling).

Nicol, 27, dominated the award with her status as the world number one squash player since August 2006.

The Penang lass also won the same award in 1999 and 2003.

Throughout last year, Nicol won six championships and emerged the runner-up in two others.

Nicol started the 2009 campaign by finishing as the runner-up in the Kuala Lumpur Open (March) and in the Caymen Islands Open (May) and winning the Texas Open (May), Seoul Open (June), Malaysia Open (July), Singapore Masters (August), Amsterdam Open (September) and Hong Kong Open (October).

The other candidates for the award are Wong Pei Tty/Chin Eei Hui (badminton), Siow Yi Ting (swimming) and Noraseela Khalid (athletics).

The national football team, who ended a 20-year gold medal drought in football in the SEA Games in Laos in December, was named the National Men's Team.

Junior Netball Team To Receive Incentive For Emerging Tops In Asia

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) -- The National junior netball team that helped Malaysia to become the top country in Asia, will receive incentives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

Malaysia who have won the Asian Junior Netball title for three consecutive editions from 2004 (Sri Lanka), 2006 (India) and 2008 (Hong Kong), would be heading to New Delhi, India from July 3 to 10, seeking for the fourth consecutive title.

Kejayaan Sukma Bukti Malaysia Tidak Ketandusan Atlet Pelapis, Kata Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Jun (Bernama) -- Kejayaan atlet-atlet program Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) meraih 279 pingat emas daripada 434 emas ditawarkan semasa Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) di Melaka membuktikan Malaysia tidak ketandusan atlet muda, yang berpotensi untuk cemerlang di peringkat antarabangsa.

Menteri Belia dan Sukan Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek berkata daripada 279 pingat emas itu, 87 diraih atlet pelapis kebangsaan sementara 192 dimiliki atlet elit.

"Jumlah keseluruhan atlet Pelapis dan Elit di bawah program Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) yang beraksi di Sukma Melaka ialah 1,723 daripada 6,500 keseluruhan atlet yang mengambil bahagian.

Diver Pandelela's Two Silver Medals Only Bright Sparks In YOG

SINGAPORE, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- Diver Pandelela Rinong's two silver medals provided the only sparks for the Malaysian contingent at the Youth Olympic Games that ended here Thursday.

Pandelela, 17, a Bidayuh from Sarawak, captured silver medals from the women's 3m Springboard and 10m platform, an unprecedented by Malaysians in the past.

Malaysia sent a 13-member contingent to compete in swimming, diving, badminton, athletics, gymnastics, sailing and weightlifting.

The only other athlete who came close to a medal was gymnast Lee Wan Nin, 15, who finished fourth but earned the consolation of being the only Asian gymnast to make the final.

Badminton fielded two players, Loh Wei Sheng, 18, in the boys event and Sonia Cheah Su Ya, 17, in the girls but both failed to make the finals although Wei Sheng reached the semifinals.

Pandelela's team-mate Ooi Tze Ling, 17, finished seventh in the 3m Springboard and 10m platform while weightlifter Fatin Atikah Osman, 17, could not make the grade in the women's 58kg category.

In sailing, Khairuneeta Mohd Affendy, 15, and Muhammad Amirul Shafiq Md Jais, 16, could only manage 10th and 18th places respectively while swimmers Kevin Lim Kar Meng, 18, and Lai Wei Li, 17, failed to make a splashing impact in the pool.

In athletics, high jumper Navin Raj Subramanian, 17, Muhd Ajmal Aiman Mat Hassan, 17 (110m hurdles) and Mohd Fahme Zam Zam Mehamad, 17 (pole vault), also failed in their bid to win medals.

PUTRAJAYA - Pembinaan velodrom antarabangsa mengikut spefikasi terkini bakal menjadi agenda penting buat Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) bagi memastikan Malaysia mampu menjadi tuan rumah kejohanan utama dunia.

Menurut menterinya, Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek, segala usaha perlu dilakukan dan kementerian akan bersungguh-sungguh bagi memastikan pembinaan velodrom ini siap secepat mungkin, sebelum berlangsungnya Sukan Olimpik 2012 London.

Nicol brushes aside Omneya for fifth World Open crown

KUALA LUMPUR: World No. 1 Nicol David captured a recordequalling fifth women’s World Open squash title in grand style in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, yesterday.

The Penangite was simply too good for fourth seed Omneya Abdel Kawy of Egypt in the final, romping home 11-5, 11-8, 11-6 as the Egyptian failed to put up much resistance despite the huge home support.
Nicol had also captured the world title in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

ISN guna biomekanik untuk taekwondo

INSTITUT Sukan Negara (ISN) bercadang untuk memperluaskan penggunaan aplikasi teknologi sains sukan biomekanik bagi membantu mempertingkatkan prestasi atlet taekwondo negara.
Ketua Pengarahnya, Datuk Dr. Ramlan Abdul Aziz berkata aplikasi tersebut yang pada awalnya digunakan bagi membantu skuad bola sepak negara akan diperluaskan penerapannya kepada atlet taekwondo, bermula awal tahun hadapan.

KUALA LUMPUR – Bekas Ketua Setiausaha Kementerian Belia dan Sukan, Datuk Mohd. Yasin Salleh dilantik Pesuruhjaya Sukan yang baru menggantikan Datuk Nik Mahmud Nik Yusuf yang tamat kontraknya, Khamis lalu.

Mohd. Yasin yang menerima tawaran untuk jawatan tersebut pada 6 Oktober lalu akan mula bertugas pada November ini.
Bagaimanapun tarikh sebenar masih belum ditetapkan kerana beliau mahu menguruskan segala urusan peribadinya terlebih dahulu.

Para Games contingent surpass target with nine golds

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s Asian Para Games contingent returned home from Guangzhou yesterday with their heads held high as they surpassed the target to win eight gold medals.

And a proud chef-de-mission, Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, said that unity and perseverance were the key behind the success to rake in a tally of 9-13-23 for sixth place in the medal standings.

China, as expected, topped the standings in the Games that ended on Sunday with a haul of 185-118-88 followed by Japan (32-39-32) and South Korea (27-43-31).

Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) telah mensasarkan kelahiran pingat emas sukan olimpik pertama negara pada edisi sukan Olimpik ke 25 yang bakal berlangsung di London pada tahun 2012. Untuk menjayakan misi tersebut, KBS telah mewujudkan satu program "Road To London 2012" sebagai persediaan menjelang temasya yang berprestij itu.

Pada permulaan program tersebut empat jenis sukan itu adalah badminton, memanah, berbasikal dan terjun akuatik yang disertai oleh 19 atlet negara telah terpilih dan yang terbaru pasukan hoki lelaki negara turut tersenarai di dalam program tersebut. Dengan kriteria pemilihan untuk atlet-atlet terbabit akan dibuat berdasarkan pencapaian tertinggi yang pernah dicapai oleh mereka di peringkat antarabangsa.

Peningkatan kutipan pingat Kontinjen Malaysia pada temasya sukan Komanwel di Delhi dan sukan Asia di Guangzhou baru-baru ini menunjukkan kita masih lagi berada dilandasan yang betul menuju sasaran pingat emas sukan Olimpik pertama negara. Dimana rekod menunjukkan kita telah berjaya mendapatkan 9 emas, 18 perak, 14 gangsa di Guangzhou dan di Delhi kita telah membawa pulang 12 emas 10 perak dan 14 gangsa.

Namun, semua pihak terbabit perlu melihat semula kejayaan tersebut, dimana hanya satu acara yang menyumbang pingat emas dalam Sukan Asia di Guangzhou iaitu berbasikal trek yang tersenarai sebagai disiplin dipertandingkan di Sukan Olimpik. Kejayaan pelumba berbasikal trek negara - Azizulhasni Awang di sukan Asia dan kejohanan - kejohanan antarabangsa menjadikan beliau antara atlet tumpuan yang akan menjadi harapan negara untuk menuai pingat emas pertama sukan olimpik. Tetapi kejayaan Azizulhasni masih dibayangi oleh kehebatan pelumba berbasikal trek nombor satu dunia - Sir Chris Hoy. Apa yang pasti ujian yang cukup getir perlu dilalui oleh Azizulhasni untuk mengalahkan musuh nombor satu beliau itu, yang sudah pasti nya akan bermati-matian untuk mempertahan kan pingat emas olimpik. Disamping dengan kelebihan Chris Hoy yang akan beraksi di gelanggang sendiri dan penyokong-penyokong beliau apabila beraksi di London nanti.

Satu lagi acara yang pasti di beri tumpuan adalah sukan Badminton. Kita masih lagi memberi sepenuh harapan untuk merangkul emas pertama sukan Olimpik kepada Dato' Lee Chong Wei, yang hanya berjaya membawa pulang pingat perak pada edisi sukan Olimpik yang lau di Beijing pada tahun 2008. Dengan status pemain nombor satu dunia, ianya tidak memberikan jaminan kepada dato' Lee Chong Wei untuk misi tersebut. Sepertimana kita tahu, Dato Lee Chong Wei pula tetap akan dibayangi kehebatan Lin Dan. Jika dilihat peluang Dato Lee Chong Wei untuk meraih emas Olimpik di London pada 2012 nampak sukar. Mana tidaknya, ketika itu usianya sudah menjangkau 30 tahun dan sudah pasti prestasinya tidak sehebat sekarang. Beliau hampir melakukannya pada Sukan Olimpik Beijing 2008, namun tewas kepada Lin Dan pada perla- wanan akhir.

Selain itu Malaysia turut menaruh harapan kepada atlet-atlet terjun negara iaitu Pandalela Renong, Leong Mun Yee, Bryan Nickson dan juga Yeoh Ken Nee untuk meraih emas pertama sukan Olimpik. Harapan ini berdasarkan kemampuan atlet menghasilkan pingat di temasya utama termasuk Kejohanan Dunia yang berlangsung di Itali selain keupayaan Pandalela Rinong menghadiahkan emas pertama di Sukan Komanwel. Rekod sukan Olimpik setakat ini masih lagi menunjukkan kehebatan atlet-atlet penerjun dari China yang pastinya akan membayangi atlet-atlet penerjun negara.

Manakala malang menimpa skuad memanah negara yang telah digugurkan daripada Program Road to London berikutan prestasi hambar mereka di temasya sukan Komanwel dan Asia baru-baru ini. Kegagalan itu menyebabkan hanya memanah di kalangan empat sukan di dalam program yang bernilai jutaan ringgit itu gagal memberikan sebarang pingat ke kontinjen negara pada temasya sukan Asia yang lalu.

Selain itu Hoki dan menembak sah disenaraikan sebagai sukan baru dalam program Road To London, ekoran prestasi cemerlang sukan tersebut sepanjang tahun ini. Namun kedua-dua sukan tersebut juga turut dibayangi kehebatan pasukan dan atlet dari negara lain.

Kini, 588 hari lagi menjelang temasya sukan Olimpik edisi ke 25 - London2012. Semua pihak terbabit perlu mengorak langkah dengan segera, bagi menjayakan misi negara untuk meraih dan membawa pulang pingat emas sukan Olimpik pertama negara. Fantasi atau realiti kita yang bertanggungjawab untuk menentukannya. Malaysia Boleh!

IPOH - Kelantan kehilangan penggempur berbisa Akmal Rizal Ahmad Rakhli, apabila pemain berusia 29 tahun itu mengesahkan dia akan menyarung jersi Perak, musim depan.

Akmal Rizal, yang membantu Red Warriors muncul juara Piala Malaysia buat kali pertama baru-baru ini, mengakui dia akan menyertai skuad Seladang dengan kontrak dua tahun.

Menurutnya, dia sudah pun menandatangani perjanjian dengan Skuad Seladang, yang kini dikendalikan bekas jurulatih kebangsaan, Kelantan, Norizan Bakar.

Datuk Thanapalan Paul Murugasu passed away Monday morning at the Universiti Hospital

Datuk Thanapalan Paul Murugasu was the secretary of Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) from 1980-1987. During that period, football was going through its glory days and was enjoyed by almost everyone in Malaysia.

Datuk Paul was born on 8 September 1924 in Kuala Lipis in Pahang. He has his primary education in Kampar, Perak and completed his Senior Cambridge at Anglo Chinese School in Ipoh.

He worked as a teacher from 1948 to 1959, beginning at Trade School in Kuala Lumpur an later at the Kajang High School before moving to the Pasar Road English School.

He joined the Election Commission in 1959 and served as the State Election Officer in Kota Bahru (1961-1965), Seremban (1965-1970) and Kuala Lumpur from 1970 until his retirement in 1974.

Datuk Paul joined FAM in 1973. He served his “apprenticeship” with the dynamic Datuk Kwok Kin Keng in FAM taking over in 1980. He held the post for seven years and served under two presidents – Tan Sri Dato’ Setia Raja Haji Hamzah bin Abu Samah and HRH Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah.

He was honoured by the HRH Sultan of Pahang in 1983 and conferred a Datukship

Paul was given recognition as a sports administrator when he was inducted into the Olympic Council of Malaysia Hall of Fame in 2007.

Describing the occasion as an exciting milestone in the build-up to the 8-16 December Games, MABGOC Director General Eng. Habib Macki said: “We’ve spent a considerable effort to make the Muscat 2010 mascots truly unique. We wanted to ensure the characters represent the ideals of the Games and excite all Games participants. From the athletes who will come from across Asia, to the local children and youth, we wanted to be sure the mascots bring people together as one as we prepare to shine at Muscat 2010!”

Giving a further explanation of the mascots, Eng. Habib Macki explained the concept behind the designs.

"We wanted to represent the vast and varied regions and areas of Oman with our mascots. As such, we created the concept of using three unique animals found here. The Green Turtle, Houbara and Tahr each represent an area of Oman’s landscape, and together will generate excitement in the lead-up to the Games,” he said.

GREEN TURTLE (Al-Med)

The Green Turtles are amongst the oldest and important marine species living in Omani water, with thousands of them returning to Oman each year to nest. The Green Turtle was chosen to represent the waters of Oman, which will play host to various sports at the 2nd Asian Beach Games.

The Green Turtle character has been named ‘Al-Med’ meaning ‘the tide’. His personality is gentle, kind and polite. He is very good at water sports as he has been practicing since a very young age. Al-Med is often a little bit awkward in social situations so usually he likes to compete in individual sports. TAHR (Al-Jebel)

The Tahr is native to Oman and lives on steep rocky slopes. The Tahr was chosen to represent the land of Oman.

Named ‘Al-Jebel’ meaning ‘the mountains’ this mascot is ambitious, he loves to compete and he often wins! He does not like to lose, although he would never cheat to win. Al-Jebel is a bit stubborn and set in his ways, but when you get to know him you find he is very caring and will do anything to protect his friends.

HOUBARA (Al-Reeh)

The Houbara is known as one of the most beautiful and magnificent birds of the desert. It has been chosen to represent the beautiful open skies and fresh air in Oman.

Named ‘Al-Reeh’ meaning ‘the wind’ this mascot is bit older and wiser than Al-Med and Al-Jebel so she often gives them advice. She loves children and often spends time with her nieces and nephews coaching them on how to play her favourite sports. She really loves to be part of a team and spending time with friends and family. She is patient and caring and always willing to lend a hand or listen when needed.

Over the coming months MABGOC will host “Meet the Mascots” opportunities for the local public in order to engage and generate excitement in the Games.

Hoy is now 10 times Track World Champion, winning his first titel at the 2002 WC, also in Ballerup. "It is a special thing winning my 10th. WC gold. OCM Targeting One Medal For Badminton At Junior Olympics

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 26 (Bernama) -- The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) is targeting at least one medal for the national junior badminton squad at the Junior Olympics in Singapore from Aug 14 to 26.

OCM honorary secretary Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said the target was made based on the potentials shown by the junior squad in several championships at the national level previously.

"However, it is too early for us to name the shuttler who has the potential to win the medal as the selection for the badminton events has yet to be made by the main body for the sport," he said when contacted by Bernama, here Friday.

Sieh said so far the OCM had only received confirmation for the yachting team. However, for other events such as badminton, swimming, shooting, diving, the confirmation will be received soon.

He said that host Singapore had specified that each country could only send 70 athletes because the Junior Olympics was being held for the first time.

"As such, although Singapore is near, we cannot send as many athletes as we like," he said.

The Junior Olympics will offer 26 events including aquatics, archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, fencing, football, equestrian, gymnastics, handball, hockey, judo, shooting, weightlifting and cycling.

Kuala Lumpur - The 5th SGA Annual Gathering will be held on 6th February 2010, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur, at 11.30 p.m., immediately after the 155th OCM Council Meeting.

A talk on “Sports and Education” will be delivered by Y.Bhg. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. A. E. Delilkan, a national Cricketer from 1955 to 1972 and the national captain from 1959 to 1972. He was an outstanding cricketer and had some outstanding performance against foreign teams. He graduated as a Medical doctor in 1960 and served with the Government, initially as a medical officer then a registrar and later a lecturer in Anaesthesiology in the University of Malaya (1965) and retired as the Chair Professor (Anaesthesiology and ICU) in 2001.

Y.Bhg. Datuk Prof. Emeritus Dr. A. E. Delilkan, was inducted to the OCM Hall of Fame on 16th January 2010.

According to the Event Organising Chairman and OCM Vice President Y BHG Dato’ Roy Rajasingham, The OCM Sports Ambassador Goodwill Programme (SGA) was established on 22nd April 2006, with the objective of using sport as a tool for peace, development, education, health and the environment to reach out to the masses with a message of goodwill in times of difficulties, trauma, etc, as role models to the younger generations.

The OCM SGA Programme is open to all former international athletes, officials and coaches.

‘All members of OCM, representatives of NSAs, Media, sponsors, and members of the public are cordially invited to attend the SGA Annual Gathering’ added Dato Roy.

KUALA LUMPUR: Russian star Elena Dementieva is eager for another exciting round in the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Malaysia Open 2010. The event is scheduled to take place at Bukit Kiara Equestrian & Country Resort from Feb 22-28.
Dementieva, the 2008 Beijing Olympics gold medallist is set to join other aces including Li Na, Sabine Liscki, Jie Zheng, Melinda Czink, Magdalena Rybarikova, Jelana Dokic, Sania Mirza, Kimiko Date Krumm and Tamarine Tanasugarn.

National player Jawariah Nordin has been awarded a wild card entry in the 32-player main draw which offers a purse of US$220,000 (RM748,000).
Dementieva, through a prerecorded interview, said she was eager to return to Kuala Lumpur after having featured in last December's Showdown of Champions billed as "Asia versus Russia".
“I’m trying to win against all my opponents and this will be an important tournament for me to help me improve my game and confidence,” said Dementieva.
“Well, I think it’s going to be an interesting challenge…a tough event but good matches against top players in the world.”
When asked of her proudest moment, Dementieva was quick to highlight her Olympics gold medal effort.
“Winning the gold medal (Olympics), that is the proudest moment in my life. There’s nothing like it and the gold medal made me a complete and a very happy person.”

OCM Conference 2010 on OCM Strategic Plan 2011-2016

The 2010 OCM Conference will be held on 23rd January 2010 at the OCM Indoor Sports Arena, Level 3, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Wisma OCM, Kuala Lumpur. The Conference will commence at 9.00 a.m. and will end at 4.30 p.m. Lunch will be served from 1.00 to 2.00 p.m. No registration fee will be charged.

The objective of the Conference is to receive inputs from affiliates of OCM, and other stake-holders to assist OCM to formulate a strategic Plan for the OCM for the five year period 2011 to 2016.

The theme of the Conference is – “From ‘good’ to ‘great’—taking OCM to new heights”

The process of formulating the five year plan will start with the Conference which will provide the opportunity to collect thoughts and ideas directed at the following questions:
· Where are we now and how well have we done? (will incorporate our strengths and weaknesses)
· Where do we want to go? (future directions)
· How do we get there? (working out strategies within the context of threats and opportunities we face as an organization)

The inputs derived from this plenary session will then be taken up by the OCM strategic planning committee which will then work on this to develop the strategic plan which will be tabled before the executive board and council of the OCM for ratification before implementation.

The OCM Conference will have the following objectives:
1. To allow the President of the OCM to present his thoughts for the future of the OCM
2. To hear from designated speakers on various aspects of the OCM’s past, present and future
3. To allow the participants at large to provide their inputs as well as to react to the presentations detailed above.

All of the substance of the presentations and the discussions will be captured by a team of rapporteurs and forwarded to the OCM Strategic Planning Committee for their further action as per the proposed schedule of events.

The UAE fans had to wait patiently for the injury time to see their players find the target when Ahmed Khalil fired home a last minute winner to power UAE to a closely contested 1-0 victory over Malaysia.

The UAE, who raised their tally to six points, will accompany Uzbekistan to the Doha 2011 AFC Asian Cup finals.

After a slow start, the Malaya Tigers began to show their best soccer. Packed with few of their enthusiastic fans, the well-built East Asians managed to make their presence felt. Norshahrul produced high speed on the flanks and spearhead Mohamad Zaquan posed a real threat to the UAE keeper Majed Nasser, thanks to the helpful assistance of Safiq bin Rahim from the centre. Mohammed Muslim and Kunanlan operated well from the midfield.

The situation put pressure on UAE strikers Mohammed Al Shehhi and Ismail Matar and they faced were closely marked by the coherent Malaysian defenders.

However, Malaysia’s centreback and the only experienced player in the squad suffered foot injury and was replaced by Amar bin Rohdan few minutes before the break.

The UAE coach Srecko Katanev was also forced to pull out injured left winger Yousuf Jaber and send in Faris Jumaa in the 23^rd minute of the first half.

At the beginning of the second half, Katanec substituted midfielder Haider Alo Ali with Ahmed Khalil to redeploy the squad into more aggressive tactics. Mohammed Al Shehhi took the position of clear spearheads while Matar played deep behind the two.

Dementieva Will Return For Malaysia Classic Tournament

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 29 (Bernama) -- After thrilling local tennis fans at the Showdown of Champion 2009 matches on Dec 19 and 20, world number five Elena Dementieva of Russia will return to Malaysia next year.

The 28-year-old Russian star, according to events organiser LD Sports Sdn Bhd, had confirmed her participation for the Malaysia Classics tournament.

The Malaysia Classic tournament is part of the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour competition and is scheduled for the end of February next year.

"Elena will be competing in the Australian Open, followed by Paris, Dubai and KL and she will be happy to return to KL after being given first class hospitality treatment, Malaysian style during the Showdown of Champions," the tennis star's mother, Vera was quoted as saying in the statement issued by the organiser, here on Tuesday.

Dementieva, the gold medalist of the 2008 Beijing Olympic, showed her incredible form during the Showdown of Champions matches held at Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam.

The new year 2010 will provide more opportunities for national athletes to excel in their sports.

4 multi-games have been lined up for these athletes to participate in, and named them as the 1st Youth Olympic Games Singapore 2010; the XIX Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010; the 16th Asian Games Guangzhou 2010 and the 2nd Asian Beach Games Muscat 2010.

"There are lots of opportunities for our athletes in every sport to compete at the highest level. So, there is no excuse for them for not working hard to become the best in Malaysia or in Asia or in the world,"

Besides the national sports associations, the state affiliates and schools were obliged to produce the future athletes.

"It is the responsibility of everybody and it is also a challenge for everybody to make the athletes to be the best in the state, in the country or in the world. We wouldn't have good national athletes if we don't have good state or school athletes.

"Now, we have to go back and see whether we have good school athletes first. Are there many of them or very few? Then, we go to the next stage. If there are really very good school athletes but there are no state athletes, then, there must be something wrong,"

And youth athletes should be given more opportunities to compete in local and international tournaments so that they can measure their strength and capability in their kind of sports, besides gauging their experience.

After the long wait, Team Lotus F1 (or 1Malaysia F1 Team, as many Malaysians know it as) has finally announced its official driver lineup: Jarno Trulli and Heikki Kovalainen will race for the Malaysian backed team in the 2010 Formula 1 season!

Both drivers were in search of a race seat for 2010. Trulli, 35, is a seasoned veteran left without a drive after Toyota pulled out of the sport, while 28-year old Kovalainen was Lewis Hamilton’s teammate at McLaren, recently dropped and replaced by World Champion Jenson Button. Our own Fairuz Fauzy will be the team’s third and reserve driver, as suggested by team technical chief Mike Gascoyne earlier. Trulli should have a good working relationship with Gascoyne, who was Technical Director at Toyota.

Kayuhan Jantung Ku will be held on December 13, 2009. This is a ride inspired by former Malaysian cyclist, Encik Shaharudin Jaafar, the first cyclist to win a cycling gold medal at SEA/ SEAP Games for Malaysia.

He achieved the feat during the 1965 Games.

As a heart patient, he underwent a heart by pass surgery this year and his deep passion for cycling inspired this ride in conjunction with World Heart Day.

Former Prime Minister, Tun Mahathir Mohamad has confirmed his attendance for this event. We seek your co operation to cover the above event.

Sania Mirza will be the drawcard in the Showdown of Champions on Dec 19-20 at the Malawati Stadium in Shah Alam. The showdown will also feature China's Zheng Jie and Russian duo Elena Dementieva and Maria Kirilenko.

The tennis beauties will not only dazzle with their skills, but also with their attire.

This is the first time WTA Tour players will play an exhibition in Malaysia as the previous two years featured ATP stars.

World No 5 Elena is a seasoned campaigner on the tour, having won 16 WTA titles and also the gold medal in last year's Beijing Olympics while Maria, who was World No 18 last year, is a rising star.

Zheng Jie's prowess is in doubles and her most memorable year was in 2006 when she and Yan Zi won two Grand Slam titles (Australian Open and Wimbledon).

Malaysia is sending 469 athletes and officials to the 25th SEA Games here, making it the fourth biggest contingent in the biennial meet which officially opens on Dec 9.

According to the Games organising statistics, Malaysia is sending 348 athletes and 121 officials to the Games.

Except for shuttlecock jiggling, muay thai, fin swimming and wrestling, Malaysia will take part in another 21 sports offered in Vientiane.

The sports are athletics, aquatics, archery, badminton, snooker & billiard, boxing, cycling, football, golf, judo, karate, sepaktakraw, shooting, table-tennis, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, weighlifting, wushu, silat and petanque.

Bekas Olahragawati kebangsaan, Zaiton Othman (gambar) dipilih sebagai penerima Anugerah Wanita dan Sukan Majlis Olimpik Malaysia (MOM) 2009 pada majlis anugerah khas di Wisma OCM - 18 Nov 2009.

Dilahirkan di Kepada Batas, Pulau Pinang pada 1959, Zaiton memulakan zaman kegemilangannya dalam arena sukan dengan membantu kuartet 4x400 meter wanita negara memenangi pingat emas pada Sukan Asia di Bangkok pada 1978.

Beliau kemudian menyumbang satu lagi pingat emas buat negara pada penampilan pertamanya pada Sukan SEA Jakarta pada 1979 sebelum bersara daripada kejohanan kompetitif selepas Sukan SEA Kuala Lumpur 1989.

Zaiton yang kini menjadi pegawai sukan sepenuh masa di Majlis Sukan Negara (MSN) menjadi jurulatih pendidikan jasmani dan psikologi sukan yang juga Pengarah Kebajikan Atlet-Atlet.

31 August 1989... The Final between Malaysia & Singapore was held @ the Stadium Merdeka at 7.30 p.m, just before the Closing Ceremony, Sea Games KL89. A capacity crowd of over 40,000 spectators withnessed a thrilling match which ended with Malaysia winning the GOLD medal with a score 3 - 1. The closing part of the first half and the whole of the second half was played in heavy rain.

Davydenko Menang Atp Terbuka Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 Okt (Bernama) -- Nikolay Davydenko menepati ramalan sebagai pemain pilihan utama apabila merangkul Kejohanan Tenis ATP Terbuka Malaysia selepas menewaskan Fernando Verdasco pada perlawanan akhir di Stadium Putra, Bukit Jalil, di sini, hari Ahad.

Pemain nombor lapan dunia dari Russia itu mengambil masa 95 minit untuk menundukkan Verdasco, dari Sepanyol, 6-4, 7-5, sekaligus merangkul gelaran ketiga dalam Jelajah ATP Dunia tahun ini.

Sebelum ini, Davydenko menjuarai Terbuka Jerman dan Terbuka Croatia.

"Saya amat letih. Adalah sukar mengumpul mata pada set pertama," kata Daydenko, 28, yang lahir di Severodonezk, Ukraine dan kini menetap di Volgograd, Russia.

Dibimbing oleh abangnya Eduard, Davydenko berkata persembahannya meningkatkan pada setiap peringkat perlawanan sehingga berjaya mempamerkan persembahan terbaik hari ini.

"Saya fikir Verdasco melakukan banyak kesilapan pada set kedua dan jika dia mengambil kesempatan melakukan pukulan rali yang berpanjangan, saya mungkin kalah kerana keletihan," katanya.

'Saya cukup bangga menjuarai kejohanan pertama di Kuala Lumpur. Sebagai juara, saya perlu kembali semula tahun depan untuk mempertahankan kedudukan ini," kata Davydenko.

Selepas ini, Davydenko akan menyertai Terbuka China yang menawarkan hadiah US$3.3 juta (RM11.4 juta) di Beijing mulai esok sebelum mengambil bahagian pada ATP Masters Shanghai 1000 yang menawarkan US$5.2 juta (RM18 juta) mulai 11 Okt.

Sebagai juara Terbuka Malaysia, Davydenko membawa pulang hadiah wang tunai US$539,000 (RM1.867 juta) serta 250 mata ranking ATP manakala Verdasco pula menerima 150 mata ranking.

Dengan pungutan mata tersebut, Davydenko menghampiri untuk mengisi salah satu daripada tiga tempat yang masih kosong untuk beraksi pada pusingan akhir Jelajah Dunia ATP Barclays di Stadium 02, London, Disember ini.

Davydenko Wins Malaysian Open, Third Atp World Tour Title

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 4 (Bernama) -- Top seed Nikolay Davydenko won the inaugural Malaysian Open title after the World No 8 clinched a straight sets win against second-seeded Fernando Verdasco of Spain in the final held at Putra Stadium here Sunday.

Davydenko took one hour and thirty five minutes to oust Verdasco in 6-4, 7-5 The win also enabled him to clinch his third title in this year's ATP World Tour after the International German Open (Hamburg), and Studena Croatia Open (Umag).

"I am feeling very tired. In the first set we played difficult points. In the second set the points were getting shorter. Just the first game of the match took 10 minutes. It was hard to recover in between points, said the 28-year-old, who was born in Severodonezk, Ukraine and currently resides in Volgograd, Russia.

Coached by his brother Eduard, Davydenko said: "I improved in every match. In the second round against [Taylor] Dent I didn't play so good. Then against [Gael] Monfils I played better. In the semi-finals (against Robin Soderling) I played a good match and today was my best match in the week. I don't think I am in my best shape physically. But I am improving every week."

He added: "I think Verdasco, in the second set made several mistakes by playing shot hits and not long rallies. If, Verdasco utilised long rallies, I might have lost the set and the final because I was tired but I was lucky he played short."

Davydenko will next be playing in the USD$3.3 million (RM11.4 million) China Open which opens at the Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center from and thereater the USD& 5.2 million (RM18 million) Shanghai ATP Masters 1000.

As the champion in the Malaysian Open, besides winning the USD$539,000 prize money, Davydenko also received a valuable 250 ATP Ranking points while Verdasco earned 150 ranking points.

With the extra points, Davydenko edged closer to claiming one of the three remaining spots at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals which will be played at the O2 Stadium in London in December.

Meanwhile, in the doubles, first-seeded Polish pair Mariusz Fyrstenberg & Marcin Matkowski emerged champions after the duo beat unseeded Igor Kunitsyn (Russia) & Jaroslav Levinsky (Czech Republic) 6-2, 6-1.

Monfils, pilihan kelima, akan bertemu dengan pemain Argentina Martin Vassallo Arguello pada pusingan kedua, selepas memenangi 70 peratus mata daripada servis, termasuk sembilan ace, untuk menewaskan Denis Istomin dari Uzbekistan 7-6(7-3), 7-6(7-2) dalam tempoh satu jam dan 46 minit.

Mengulas mengenai kemenangan dalam kedua-dua set dicapai menerusi tie-break, Monflis berkata beliau tahu perlawanan itu sukar baginya kerana beliau baru tiba di Malaysia pagi ini.

Many Muslim athletes will be combining the physical demands of their sport with the rigours of all-day fasting when Ramadhan, the holiest month in the Islamic calendar, gets underway on 21 August... A pioneering new study by FIFA medical experts suggest that it can be done...

Suprising results...

The results, published in the December 2008 "Journal of Sports Sciences", suprised even the experts, since they showed no adverse effects among the fasting players in any of the measured biochemical, nutritional and performances variables. In fact, the physical performances of the fasting players improved slightly during the Ramadhan training sessions.

It was really amazing for us to see these kind of results in what was a very high-level study involving a lot of top international scientist. There is a clear perception among many coaches and sports people that the Ramadhan fast has a negative effect on performance, but there is little scientific evidence to support this suggestion.

On possible explanation for the stability of the players performance levels may lie in the nature of the Ramadhan fast itself, which does not so mush prevent players from eating their normal diets, but rather forces them to simply alter the timing of their meals. The Ramadhan fast (or sawm) stipulates that Muslims may take food or drink only between sunset and sunrise.

This presents absolutely no problem when it comes to health because our body uses nutrients on a 24-hour basis regardless of when exactly we eat or drink. Bt it does mean that players should pay close attention to what they do eat and drink at the permitted times. It is recomended that they get enough sleep and good nutrition during Ramadhan to preserve both their performances and their general health. They shouls also think about taking four or five days to adjust to their new eating routine, similar to the time that athletes should take when adjusting to changes in attitude.

REAL MADRID - Beberapa bintang bola sepak yang beragama Islam seperti Freddie Kanoute tetap berpuasa walaupun bermain dalam bulan Ramadan, lapor sebuah akhbar semalam.

Bekas penyerang kelab bola sepak Tottenham Hotspur di England itu, Kanoute kini bermain untuk kelab Sevilla di Sepanyol.

Pemain yang turut mengikuti langkah Kanoute adalah Mahamadou Diarra, Lassana Diara dan Karim Benzema dari kelab bola sepak Real Madrid.

Semasa bulan puasa, beberapa doktor terpaksa bekerja pada setiap masa bagi memikirkan formula terbaik sebagai rutin untuk memastikan pemain-pemain itu kekal cergas semasa bulan puasa.

Beberapa akhbar tabloid Sepanyol memainkan tajuk utama akhbar mengenai bulan puasa dan perdebatan sama ada pemain sepatutnya dibenarkan berpuasa dan bermain bola pada masa yang sama di bulan Ramadan.

Muslim leader blasts Mourinho over comment on Ramadan

ROME: A Muslim leader in Italy on Tuesday criticised Inter Milan coach Jose Mourinho (pic) for comments the Portuguese made about Ramadan at the weekend.

Muslims around the world are fasting during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, during which faithful followers abstain from eating or drinking during daylight hours.

One of those followers is Inter’s Ghana midfielder Muntari Sulley, who Mourinho hauled off after just half an hour of Sunday’s 1-1 home draw against Bari due to the former Portsmouth man’s poor performance.

Afterwards, Mourinho suggested Sulley had played badly due to a lack of energy associated with his fast.

But Mohamed Nour Dachan, president of the Union of Islamic communities and organisations in Italy (UCOII), claimed the coach has got it wrong.

“I think Mourinho could do with talking a little less,” he told SKY TV.

“A practising (Muslim) player is not weakened because we know from the Institute of Sports Medicine that mental and psychological stability can give a sportsman an extra edge on the field.

“A player who is a believing Christian, Jew or Muslim is certainly calmer pyschologically and that improves his performance.”

That is an opinion that Mourinho did not share on Sunday and he was clearly irked with his player after the match.

“Muntari had some problems related to Ramadan, perhaps with this heat it’s not good for him to be doing this (fasting),” said Mourinho.

“Ramadan has not arrived at the ideal moment for a player to play a football match.” — AFP

Semalam (KBS) dan (MSN) meletakkan sasaran antara 30 dan 35 pingat emas untuk sukan Sea di Vientiane 2009.

Sasaran ini mungkin realistik kerana kebanyakan sukan penyumbang emas di Korat tidak dipertandingkan di Vinetiane, antaranya...sukan bola keranjang, bowling, ekuestrian, gimnastik (artistik/gimrama), hoki, lawn bowl, pelayaran, polo, skuasy, terjun, trialtlon dan lumba basikal, yang menjadi lubuk emas bagi kontinjen Malaysia.

Manakala sasaran tidak realistik saya adalah sebanyak 87 pingat emas untuk pasukan Malaysia mencapai rekod pungutan pingat emas yang ke 1000 dalam temasya sukan Sea. Untuk rekod sehingga kini Malaysia telah berjaya merangkul sebanyak 913 pingat emas dari temasya pertama SEAP games di Bangkok hingga ke temasya yang lalu di Korat.

Sememangnya sasaran berikut adalah tidak realistik... berdasarkan situasi semasa... mungkin kita boleh sasarkan pingat emas yang ke 1000 itu di temasya sukan Sea yang akan datang di Bandung 2011. Malaysia Boleh!

ASTRO ARENA - soon to be launched!

Mr. Bob Kemp, of Astro presented a paper on the soon to be launched, new local sports initiative on the Family Package of ASTRO under the name of ASTRO ARENA. In his briefing, he stated that ASTRO ARENA would be 4 channels in one, broadcasting mainly in Bahasa Malaysia and aimed primarily to viewers aged 10-40 and to deliver 700 hours of live, local sport a year with an extra 2000 hours replays to allow more people to watch local sport. There would also be an average of 56 hours a week of Malaysians playing sport at International levels. He said that subject to contract negotiations, in the next 18 months, Astro Arena would be showing young Malaysians competing in the SEA Games, the Commonwealth and Asian Games and the Youth Olympics in Singapore.

Mr. Bob Kemp added that Astro Arena would build and operate Malaysia’s first and only 7 day a week local sports newsroom offering up to 5 live bulletins a day with some extra weekend and late night replays. The Bulletins would have a roundup of international sport and longer form of highlights and interviews when warranted. The latest results would eventually be visible across the bottom of the screen on the ‘Arena Sports Ticker’

He said that the schedule would feature appointment viewing at 8:30 most nights with extended previews, reviews, highlights and discussion programming to build the interest in Malaysian local sporting heroes. Viewers would be encouraged to ‘Get into the Game’ with an extensive ‘Sport for All’ initiative developed with the OCM and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, using some of Malaysia’s best athletes.

He stated that OCM and Astro have signed the MOU prior to entering into a Strategic Alliance as the backbone to the Channel’s success. Astro wished to cover as many major regional, national and state level events as was possible. Astro obviously could not cover everything but if the National Sports Associations (NSAs) were to schedule more than one match or tournament at the same time, some could be recorded for delayed telecast.

Mr. Bob Kemp stated that Astro would support the NSAs’ existing naming right and ground sponsors by offering them attractive on-air packages as a first option to be involved in the Channel. Astro Arena would be looking for several ‘foundation sponsors’ to help launch the Channel. Before Astro committed to any broadcast Astro would sign a Licensing Agreement with the NSAs that would include an offer to assist with any International exploitation of the NSAs’ events for mutual benefit. Other events would be covered as news items and some as extended highlights in Astro’s magazine support programming but only if Astro knew about the events.

Mr. Bob Kemp stated that he had already started investigating a new calendar database that would allow every NSA to input their events or provide details for the OCM to input, which would avoid too many clashes between major events across the calendar. Eventually, Astro hoped the calendar would be available via the internet down to a state level for the individual fan to see what is on in their area.

Astro has an on-line and mobile presence – Stadiumastro.com that would include news, chat, blogs, commentator columns, results and user generated content from local and international sport. There would be ‘click thru’ visibility to the NSAs’ web sites and Astro would eventually build a community on-line presence that the NSAs could use if they do not support a website now. So the commitment is not just to a Channel but to a whole community of local sports fans across Malaysia.

Once Astro and OCM had determined a Launch Date, there would be a signing ceremony and press announcement about Astro Arena, which would be by the end of the year. Astro’s commitment is very big, such as the need to build new studios, a newsroom, engage the best talent and crew and purchase 2 new OB trucks to cover all the sport.

Mr. Bob Kemp stressed that sports events Calendar would be imperative to the success of the Channel. This was where NSAs’ help was required to keep the OCM continually updated on the NSAs’ events and timetable. Astro would be looking for results, news and feedback. A local sports channel is nothing without content and the NSAs have to provide all the content.

To support the NSAs and to build Astro Arena into the best local sports outlet in Malaysia, a number of marketing, promotional and stadium events would be conducted each year. Astro would work with the NSAs to develop new properties that could be jointly promoted. Astro would employ some Arena Ambassadors – key national sporting heroes - to help launch the Channel and send the Arena Angels Cheerleaders to add jest and excitement to selected events.

Mr. Bob Kemp concluded his talk by saying that Astro Arena would support the NSAs if the NSAs were to support Astro Arena, so as to jointly celebrate Malaysian sport to make the Malaysian team the viewers ‘home team’.

YAM Tunku Imran ibni Almarhum Tuanku Ja’afar, thanked Mr. Bob Kemp for his briefing and appealed to the NSAs to make use of the opportunities of Astro Arena, to promote and develop their sports and at the same time increase the revenue potential of their sports. He stressed the importance of early planning and preparation of their events calendar so as to allow Astro Arena sufficient time to plan their life-broadcast programme. He stated that Astro Arena would benefit the efficient and hardworking NSAs more, and it was therefore important for all NSAs to become more efficient and plan and organise more exciting and attractive competitions.

Manchester United football club is returning to Asia this summer for a pre-season tour. The Red Devils have recently lifted their third consecutive Premier League title. Manchester United last played here in 2001, and this will mark their third trip to Kuala Lumpur.

Manchester United's 1st team will be playing the Malaysian Selection at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday, 18 July 2009 and kick off is at 5.30pm.

Malaysian was delighted with the national team's performance in the 3-2 defeat to United at the National Stadium.

AYG 2009 - In Memories...

Congratulations to the Organising Committee of the Singapore 1st Asian Youth Games and the Singapore National Olympic Council for the great success in organsing the 1st Asian Youth Games in Singapore, from 29th June to 7th July 2009.

Due to travel restrictions as a result of the H1N1, Malaysia was restricted to participating in only 2 sports, Football and Sailing. The Football team unfortunately, did not qualify for the second round and so returned to Malaysia before the 1st Asian Youth Games started. The 2 sailing athletes, Muhamad Amirul Shafig Md. Jais and Khairunneeta Mohd Afendy, who were in Singapore for the pre-Games training, remained in Singapore to participate in the Byte CII Sailing events for boys and for girls under 14 years.
Muhamad Amirul Shafig Md. Jais won a bronze medal in the Boys’ Byte CII event, while Khairunneeta Mohd Afendy finished in 4th position in the Byte CII girls’ event.

Malaysia was to have sent a contingent of 109 athletes and officials headed by chef de mission Marina Chin for the AYG until the directive from the Education Ministry which barred students and teachers from participating in overseas sports competition because of the Influenza A(H1N1) outbreak...but two members from the sailing team who were already in Singapore continued to compete.

Malaysia were brought crashing down to earth as they bowed out of the 1^st Asian Youth Games 2009 football competition, losing 2-1 to Thailand at Victoria Junior College, Singapore on the 24th of June. Malaysian coach Mohd Khalid Shahdan kept faith with the same starting eleven who had displayed great tenacity to shock D.P.R. of Korea 1-0 in their opening match.

Malaysian Muhamad Amirul SHAFIQ fought hard and initially led the race, however he made a mistake on the course and headed for the wrong mark after the second upwind, handing first position to Singapore and taking second for himself. This was enough to secure him his bronze medal.

The successful conclusion of the sailing event certainly bodes well for next year, when the Youth Olympic Games will be held at the same venue.

Cheng Chu Sian turut memenangi pingat emas perseorangan dan perak berpasangan di Kejohanan Asia pertama yang berlangsung di Shenzhen, China.

Kini pemanah ini berada di kelompok ke 10 terbaik dunia.

Spain draw Malaysia 3:3 (2:1)

In thelast preliminary round match in Johor Bahru, Spain took on the hosts from Malaysia in an all-or-nothing battle for who was going to join Korea in the medal round.

Spain had a slight advantage, as a draw would do for them, while Malaysia had to win, and they gave the Iberians a good scare early in the game when Faizal Saari netted in the 10th minute.

The European Champions remained unimpressed however, and turned the tables with a double hit about ten minutes later. They could then hold on to the lead for a good part of the match, and even extended the lead to two goals midway through the second half, but Malaysia, to the great delight of a once more absolutely packed stadium responded with a goal five minutes later.

Malaysia even scored the equalizer in the last ten minutes of the match, but it wasn't enough: the draw sees Spain through to the medal round, while Malaysia will be playing in the 9 to 16 bracket.
